Types of Grenade

Fragmentation grenades

Fragmentation grenades are the most common. They have a metal or plastic body filled with an explosive. Fragmentation grenades are commonly called frag grenades.

Concussion grenades

Concussion grenades are, for the most part, a non-lethal weapon. More commonly known as "flash/bang" grenades, they are designed to stun an enemy. Concussion grenades are most often used in areas where penetration of walls by fragmentation or shrapnel could present a danger to friendly troops or noncombatants. A "Flashbang" like the M84 is designed to stun, blind, distract, for a limited time (a few seconds).

Percussion grenades

A percussion grenade is different from some of the other grenades in that it detonates on impact as opposed to having a fuse. Timed fused grenades tend to be safer and more robust than percussion grenades and are often preferred due to being safer. Some percussion grenades are fitted with a fuse as a backup.

Incendiary grenades

An Incendiary grenade works by a chemical reaction which produces intense heat. Filled with 600-800 grams of thermate, the reaction is know as a "thermite reaction". Incendiary grenades are useful for detroying artillery, vehicles and weapons caches. Termite burns at 2200 °C and can produce some of the worst and most painful burns.

White phosphorus is also used, which is very poisonous and burns at a temperature of 2800 °C.
