The first grenade was invented in China, when Chinese soldiers packed gunpowder into ceramic and/or metal containers. This was during the Song Dynasty (960—1279 AD). These first bombshells didn't appear in Europe until 1467, by which time the Chinese had alrady discovered the potential of making explosives by packing hollowed cannonballs with gunpowder.
Pin and Pineapple The word grenade derives from the ancient French ?pomme grenate. It probably derived from the French word for pomegranate, because the bulbous shapes of early grenades resembled that fruit. Grenades came into use, in Europe, around the 15th century and were found to be particularly effective when exploded among enemy troops in the ditch of a fortress during an assault.
During the Creima War (1854-1856) the grenade was favoured during trench warfare. Sometimes they improvised by using a soda water bottle full of gunpowder, twisted nails and other sharp objects. They would stick a bit of tow in for a fuse, light and throw it quickly into the neighbours pit.
The Mills bomb came into existence during the First World War and was described as the first 'safe grenade'. This was the first modern fragmentation grenade to be used by the British front-line and around 75million grenades were made.
The Molotov Cocktail is a long range gasoline delivery system. It also makes a very nice fire where ever it hits. The Molotov cocktail is closely related to the same principle of Napalm bombs. The Molotov cocktail is an improvised grenade prepared from a glass bottle filled with alcohol (ethanol ) or gasoline (petrol) ignited by a burning strip of cloth when the thrown bottle bursts against its target. M67 Grenade The Molotov cocktail received its name during the 1939 Winter War , but had been in use earlier in the decade. It is commonly used by guerrilla forces and rioters in urban settings. It is deployed by lighting the wick and then throwing it, launching it from a large slingshot, or by dropping it from a height (such as a building).
The basic "pin-and-pineapple" design is still used in some modern grenades, although grenades such as the M67 fragmentaion grenade has a smooth exterior which is good for rolling into a room or thrown like a baseball.
